Why Kigali is a Key Player in Africa’s Creative Future

Editors May 11, 2026 2 minutes read
eeeee

As Africa’s creative economy expands, so do the cities steering its direction. For the third year running, Move Afrika returns to Kigali, Rwanda. And with each passing year, the question shifts less from why Kigali and more toward how this city continues to hold the center of Africa’s creative future.

The answer starts with its people.

Kigali pulses with the energy of a continent where the median age is just 19.3 years making Africa the youngest region on Earth. This isn’t merely a statistic; it’s a living, breathing force. It means energy. Imagination. A generation eager to build, create, and connect.

Across Africa, the creative economy is emerging as a major engine of opportunity and growth. Africa’s film and audiovisual sector alone could generate over 20 million jobs and $20 billion in annual revenue.

More broadly, the African Development Bank has identified cultural and creative industries as a booming opportunity within continental efforts to diversify economies. Through initiatives like Fashionomics Africa which supports fashion and textile entrepreneurs with training, financing, and market access the Bank is investing in music, film, design, and digital content as drivers of growth, enterprise development, and job creation.

Kigali has placed itself at the heart of this momentum.

Over the past decade, Rwanda has built the infrastructure, technology, and cultural platforms that allow creativity to flourish. That includes expanding nationwide digital access through projects like the Rwanda Digital Acceleration Project, which strengthens the digital innovation ecosystem, and developing purpose-built venues such as BK Arena one of East Africa’s largest indoor event spaces.
